چکیده

To appear in the book String theory and fundamental interactions published on the occasion of the celebration of the 65th birthday of Gabriele Veneziano, 1 Half a century of large-scale magnetic fields 1.1 A premise The content of the present contribution is devoted to large-scale magnetic fields whose origin, evolution and implications constitute today a rather intriguing triple point in the phase diagram of physical theories. Indeed, sticking to the existing literature (and refraining from dramatic statements on the historical evolution of theoretical physics) it appears that the subject of large-scale magnetization thrives and prosper at the crossroad of astrophysics, cosmology and theoretical high-energy physics. Following the kind invitation of Jnan Maharana and Maurizio Gasperini, I am delighted to contribute to this set of lectures whose guideline is dictated by the inspiring efforts of Gabriele Veneziano in understanding the fundamental forces of Nature. My voice joins the choir of gratitude proceeding from the whole physics community for the novel and intriguing results obtained by Gabriele through the various stages of his manifold activity. I finally ought to convey my personal thankfulness for the teachings, advices and generous clues received during the last fifteen years.

Cosmic Magnetic Fields From Particle Physics

I review a number of particle-physics models that lead to the creation of magnetic fields in the early universe and address the complex problem of evolving such primordial magnetic fields into the fields observed today. Implications for future observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) are briefly discussed. Talk presented at the 7th International Symposium on Particles, Strings and ...

Semilocal and Electroweak Strings

We review a class of non-topological defects in the standard electroweak model, and their implications. Starting with the semilocal string, which provides a counterexample to many well known properties of topological vortices, we discuss electroweak strings and their stability with and without external influences such as magnetic fields. Other known properties of electroweak strings and monopol...

For a universe containing cosmological constant together with uniform arrangements of magnetic fields, strings, or domain walls, exact solutions to the Einstein equations are shown to lead to a universe with ellipsoidal expansion. The magnetic field case is the easiest to motivate and has the highest possibility of finding application in observational cosmology. PACS numbers: 98.80.-k, 98.62.En...

Cosmological Consequences of Superconducting String Networks

We consider the cosmological consequences of a network of superconducting cosmic strings. For strong enough current the period of friction domination never ends. Instead a plasma scaling solution is reached. We demonstrate that this gives rise to a very different cosmology than the usual horizon scaling solution. In particular the string network gives rise to a distinct imprint on the microwave...
